Anders Bartel Ness

Anders “Andy” Bartel Ness, 92, of Kasson, MN died on Monday, December 21, 2020 at Fairview Care Center in Dodge Center, MN.

Andy was born on October 14, 1928 in rural Olmsted County to Norman and Alice (Osmundsen) Ness.  He was baptized and confirmed at South Zumbro Lutheran Church.  He graduated from Kasson High School in 1946.  He farmed with his father for five years before going to Waldorf College in Forest City, IA.  He transferred to Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where he received a degree in physics and math.  He served in the Army and was stationed at White Sands, New Mexico where he was assigned to a professional scientific group working on rocket development.  When discharged, he worked at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN as a resident assistant in electroencephalogy.   Wanting more training, he enrolled at North Dakota State University where he earned a degree in electrical engineering.  He returned to Mayo Clinic, Rochester, where he worked in the Section of Engineering until he retired in 1995.  His work at the clinic included helping automate laboratories, helping design and develop computer-based intensive care units, and surgical monitoring.

On August 12, 1962, he married Judith White.  He designed and helped build their home in rural Dodge County.  He had many interests including reading, travel astronomy, archeology, and working outdoors on his small tree farm.

He is survived by his wife, Judith; two sons, Ed (Laura) Ness of Traverse City, MI and Jon (Julie) Ness of Lakeville, MN; two daughters, Debra Ness of Rochester, MN and Kathlyn (Jeff) Brumfield of Mantorville, MN; six grandchildren, Ryan Ness, Abbie (Troy) Ness O’Donnell, Mollie Ness, Susie Ness, Emma Brumfield, and Hannah Brumfield.  He is also survived by two sisters, Marguretta (Robert) Yaeger and Norma (Robert) Aarsvold and two brothers, James (Irene) Ness and Donald (Dorene) Ness.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law.
