Arno was born May 30, 1922, the son of Edward and Matilda (Rodert) Moenning in Madison, NE. Arno attended Green Garden Parochial School, attended high school in Madison, NE and enlisted in the United States Army on August 28, 1942. He later studied at Harvard University in electronics and radio and was a Corporal Weather Equipment Technician of the 74th Army Air Force Base Unit upon his honorable discharge on February 27, 1946. After his time in the Army Weather Bureau he was called to agriculture and especially animal agriculture.

Arno was known for his Hampshire hogs that started as a 4-H project in 1939. He and the family moved to Minnesota in 1958, and further developed the herd through performance testing. Moenning Farms sold breeding stock to commercial and purebred producers throughout 23 states and internationally. Over the years he received many awards for the quality of his hogs and in 1978, was awarded the National Swine Improvement Federation Producer of the Year. In 1982, he was inducted into the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in starting local and state pork producer organizations and served in many leadership roles.
