Beaumont “Beau” Dalton Senjem:

Beau Senjem of Hayfield passed away on Tuesday, December 28th at the age of 94.

Beumont Dalton Senjem was born July 6th, 1927, in a small house in Rock Dell, MN. He was the only child of Earl and Tillie (Johnson) Senjem. Earl worked in the Rock Dell store and then moved the family to Hayfield where he opened Senjem Fairway Foods. Beau worked in the Fairway Foods store as a teenager and while attending Hayfield High School. After graduation from high school, Beau joined the U.S. Army and served in the 2nd Infantry Division, 37th Artillery Battalion during World War II.

Beau Senjem married Ruth Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield on August 28th, 1949. They recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary! They bought their first house on 1st Ave. SE in Hayfield where they raised their four children. Beau started working at the Hormel plant in Austin in 1950. He worked there until 1981 and then took early retirement to pursue other ventures. He was co-owner in the trailer court in Hayfield until around 1990. He also built a car wash, which doubled as a small car lot for the half dozen cars that Beau always had for sale. Beau was a self-proclaimed “car guy” and loved cars. He enjoyed buying and selling used cars his whole life. The social part was as important to him as the business side. Beau loved people and they loved him back! He would light up when he had a chance to talk to anyone. He could make friends of complete strangers in a matter of minutes. He was a good listener and a great storyteller. In retirement Beau loved fishing and relaxing at Mille Lacs Lake. Being “up at the lake” was a family tradition Beau and Ruth started when their children where very young. They continued to spend the summers at the lake until just a few years ago, when they sold their cabin in Wahkon, MN. Beau and Ruth have lived just off 2 nd St NW in Hayfield for the last 20 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Hayfield American Legion.

He was our north star. Together with Ruthie they were models for their family and showed us the way. Always ready to lend an ear, lend a hand and to just visit.  Beau was blessed with a long life, but his wife Ruth and his family are profoundly sad to lose him. We will miss his broad smile, gentle loving warmth, intelligence, sense of humor and big generous heart. We cherish our memories of him and the impact he had on all who knew him. Beau was a very special man, and we appreciate the fact that he really did have a wonderful life!

Beau is survived by his wife, Ruth; four children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Paul (Patricia) Senjem of Kenyon, MN, and their children, Guye and Kathryn and her daughter, Hailey and son, Simon; Holly (Stanley) Arendts of Hayfield, and their son, Logan; Kari (John) Davis of Chanhassen, MN and their daughter, Hannah; Penny (Gene) Tubbs of Red Wing, MN and their sons, Zachary (Katie), and Gunnar, and many dear nephews and nieces. Beau was preceded in death by his parents Earl & Tillie.
