Charles David Freeman

At the age of 73, Charles (Charly) passed away at home surrounded by family. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who loved him deeply. Charly was born on August 4, 1952, to Ottilie and Ellis Freeman at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Charly married Katherine Maslowski of Red Wing, MN in 1974. Together, they enjoyed traveling and making memories. He embraced life’s adventures and appreciated opportunities to explore new places.

A hardworking construction worker, he took great pride in his craft. Among the projects that meant the most to him was his work on the Kimball and Coleman Ames House in Chicago, Illinois. Charly worked for the U.S. Soccer Federation and brought the houses to their historic grandeur in preparation for the World Cup Soccer games held in the United States in 1994. He believed in doing a job well, worked diligently, and found satisfaction in building something that would last.

Above all, he was devoted to his family. He treasured time spent with those he loved and was happiest when surrounded by them. He was also deeply patriotic and carried a sincere love for his country throughout his life.

He faced many difficult health and personal challenges during the last decade of his life, showing resilience through those struggles. Even during those years, he found enjoyment in life's simple pleasures. He was well known among family and friends for his gambling strategies and his enthusiasm for visiting the casino, where he enjoyed the excitement, conversation, and chance to test his luck.

“That being said”, he will be remembered for his strong work ethic, love of family, patriotic spirit, sense of adventure, and the stories and laughter he shared with those around him. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Charly was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harry Freeman; brothers in law, David Maslowski and Jeffrey Mehnke. He is survived by his wife Katherine; sisters-in-law, Anne Mehnke, Gerrie Maslowski, Michele (Mike) Just and Dawn Maslowski; and nieces, nephews and great nieces.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. May he rest in peace. The family of Charly would like to thank the team of St. Croix Hospice for their companionate care and support.
