A Mass of Christian burial for Dorothy Mae Sowieja will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013, at St. John Baptist de LaSalle Catholic Church, 20 2nd Street NE in Dodge Center with Father Gregory Parrot celebrating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Dodge Center.
Dorothy Mae Sowieja, 87, passed away on Tuesday evening, December 17, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Dorothy was born on October 29, 1926, the daughter of Ray and Bertha (Handtke) Hulbert in Janesville, WI. Dorothy was raised in Rochester as a child and was a graduate of John Marshall School. She was married to Emil Sowieja on December 17, 1945, in Rochester, MN and they celebrated 68 years of marriage. Dorothy and her husband farmed in various locations in Dodge County. She was a group leader of the local Weight Watchers Chapter for 15 years and a member of the Minnesota Flying Farmers Association and Dodge County Flying Club as a charter member. Dorothy was a co-pilot and had a pilot's license. She was an active and faithful member in her church, taught Religious Education; wrote and directed various plays and skits for the church, was active in the choir and altar society. She wrote a column for the newspaper "Memo's from Mimi." Her family was a very important part of her life. Dorothy and Emil enjoyed 25 years vacationing with Pioneer Research in Florida and 25 years vacationing at Cedar Lake.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Emil Sowieja, Dodge Center, MN; children, Charita (Ray) Kubat, Owatonna, MN; Jay (Mary Jo) Sowieja, Cleveland, MN; Barbara (David) Kubat, Rochester, MN; Roger (Sue) Sowieja; Dodge Center, MN; 17 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 1 sister.
Visitation will be 4:00~7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2013, at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home, 25 South Street SW in Dodge Center and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. There will be a rosary at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home on Friday.
