Dorothy S. Zeller, 94, died on October 1, 2012, at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield where she had been a resident for four years.
Dorothy Christine Swanson was born on August 26, 1918, the daughter of Swan and Clara (Thompson) Swanson in Kenyon, MN, the youngest of nine children. She grew up in Goodhue area and graduated from high school there. After attending normal school training, Dorothy taught in the Roscoe and Berne areas. She completed her elementary education degrees through Winona State and the University of MN. She taught in the West Concord and Rochester School Districts and later became the elementary principal at West Concord. Dorothy was the consummate educator, always going above and beyond the call of duty to find "just the right thing" to enhance the lessons of her students. Dorothy married Haven William Zeller on June 17, 1938, and they lived on the Zeller family farm in Berne, MN. Together they enjoyed traveling and attending many children and grandchildren events. After Haven's death and her retirement, Dorothy became long time nanny to the Mitch Frederick family, Ray Wiest family, great granddaughter, Lauren Pollock, and Doctors Fred and Irene (Meisner) Meyer family of Rochester. She was still teaching! Dorothy was an avid reader and a frequent patron of the Kasson and Hayfield libraries. She enjoyed playing the piano and encouraged her children in their musical endeavors. She was a Sunday School teacher, a Stephens Minister, and belonged to several organizations in her church.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Doug) Matti, Hayfield, MN; son, Dan (Marsha) Zeller, Anoka, MN; five grandchildren, Kim (Glenn) Pollock and Michael (Leah) Matti, Hayfield; Kris (Wayne) Petermeier, Browerville, MN; David (Tirzah) Zeller, Brooklyn Park, MN; Jessica Zeller, St. Louis Park; ten great grandchildren, Lauren (Zach) Meyer; Sam, Ben, Abigail Pollock; Brent, Kyle, and Nate Petermeier; Nicholas, Olivia and Isaac Matti. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Haven, one daughter Mary Ann, four brothers and four sisters.
Blessed be her memory.
