Committed Christian, devoted husband, and caring father, grandfather, and uncle, Douglas “Doug” Alvin Payne, 75, of Dodge Center, MN passed away peacefully on October 18, 2025, at Timberdale Trace Memory Care Facility in Owatonna, MN.
Doug was born March 18, 1950, in Owatonna, MN to Donald and Deane (Rood) Payne of Dodge Center and then Claremont, MN where he grew up on the family dairy farm. Following graduation from the Southern School of Agriculture in Waseca, he spent the next year farming with his father. He enlisted in the Navy and left for bootcamp in San Diego, CA in June of 1969. While serving his four years at sea on the USS Josephus Daniels and later back on shore, Doug had the opportunity to see the world. He met his wife Karen Osborn, while stationed in Washington DC in 1972, and they were married December 30, 1973. Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to Minnesota to pursue his associates degree at the U of M in Waseca where he claims he crammed two years of school into five as he worked, married, began farming, and started his family along with taking the courses to complete his degree. Doug’s heart was to be a dairy farmer and he worked at that long and hard with the help of his wife and children. He was able to buy the family farm Payne’s Acres in Claremont that his grandfather Arthur Payne had purchased in 1940.
Doug is survived by his children, Brian (Kristina) of Darien, IL, Cathy (Andrés) Jara of Dodge Center, MN, Marcy (Randy) Kersten of Milton, WI; grandchildren, Corbin, Natalie and Isaac Kersten and Matías and Rafael Jara; brothers, David (Janette) of Charles City, IA and Roger of Dodge Center, MN; sisters, Miriam (Bill) Shook of Lake Elmo, MN, Elise (Alan) Walker of Amery, WI, Madelyn (Richard) Neher of Dodge Center, MN and Janelle (Glenn) Weaver of Norfolk, VA; brothers-in-law, Phillip (Judy) Osborn of Upton, KY, Joel (Doneta) Osborn of Milton, WI, Timothy (Jayme) Osborn of Upton, KY and Stephen (Angie) Osborn of Firestone, CO and numerous loved nieces and nephews.
