Joan Joyce Opseth, 85, passed away on December 16, 2020, at St. Mark’s Memory Care in Austin, MN. Joan was born in Morristown, MN on January 29, 1935, the daughter of Sterling and Vera (Simpson) Deming. Joan graduated from Claremont High School and began working at the Owatonna Bank. It was there that she met her future husband.
Joan married Don Opseth on June 24, 1956 in Owatonna, MN. The daughter of dairy farmers, Joan had a strong work ethic. After their move to Hayfield, she helped to support their growing family by working for Winslow’s Bakery, Alibi Lanes, and several years as a nurse’s aide for Field Crest Care Center where she was always willing to work any of the three shifts. Eventually, that came to end when Earl Himle came knocking on their front door and asked Joan if she’d consider coming to work for him and Jim Jorstad at the bank. Joan retired from Citizens State Bank in Hayfield after 34 years of service.
Never one to sit idle, she was always busy with her hobbies of cooking, sewing, gardening, canning, crocheting, quilting or baking to name a few. Together, she and Don enjoyed their camping trips, traveling the country on their many bus trips with Glenn’s Motor Coach Tours and making many orders of lefse during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Joan was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hayfield serving many years as their church treasurer. During her later years at Citizens State Bank she helped plan the trips for the banks Monarch Travel Club. She served on the Field Crest Care Center Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, was an election judge for the City of Hayfield, treasurer of the Hayfield Senior Citizen’s Center and helped deliver Meals on Wheels.
Joan is survived by her husband, Don Opseth, Austin, MN; children, Linda (Al) Henslin, Waseca, MN; David (Laurie) Opseth, Wanamingo, MN; Kevin (Sheri) Opseth, Alden, MN; Diana (Toby) Nelson, Harmony, MN; Donna (Dan) Adams, Rochester, MN; 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and her sister Janet Meyer, Janesville, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson and three brothers.
Joan’s family would like to thank St. Mark’s Assisted Living and Memory Care for their incredible care given to Joan over the last several years. Thank you also to Mayo Hospice for their care during Joan’s illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her memory can be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Hayfield, Field Crest Care Center Auxiliary or the donor’s choice.
BLESSED BE HER MEMORY.
