Laura Gertrude Haskin

Our loving mother, Laura Gertrude Haskin, 96, of Pine Island, MN, formerly of Mantorville, MN passed away on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island, MN.

Laura was born on the family farm in Sargeant, MN on April 14, 1925, to Oscar and Jennie (Grovdahl) Hellen.  She was a sister to Harold, Osmond, Doris, and Ernest Hellen.  She was baptized and confirmed at Evanger Lutheran Church in Sargent, MN.  She attended grammar school in rural Sargeant and graduated from Austin High School in 1943. She then went on to receive her bachelor’s degree at Winona State. She has resided in Mantorville, MN since 1963.  She married George E. Haskin Jr. in January 1951 and they later divorced in 1965.  She was a loving mother to her 8 children: Steven, Linda, Richard, Donette, Susan, David, Gregg, and Brian.

Laura worked as a teacher for 37 years. She started in a one-room school and then retired at Hayfield School District in 1994.  She loved her children and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.   She enjoyed writing, reading, and traveling.  Did I mention, she loved children! She also enjoyed working with the Mantorville Historical Society and many groups at St. John’s Lutheran Church.  She was a devoted member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kasson, MN.  She had many dear and wonderful friends; everyone was welcome when mom was around.

Laura is survived by her children, Steven (Brenda) Haskin of Beaver Creek, OH, Richard (Deborah) Haskin of Spooner, WI, Linda Haskin of Ridgeland, WI, Susan (Mike Mueller) Schoenrock of Kasson, MN, David (Nancy) Haskin of Grand Meadow, MN, Gregg (Tracy) Haskin of Mantorville, MN, and Brian (Peggy) Haskin of Farmington, MN; 17 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sister; and a daughter, Donette Mitchell.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 12, 2021, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 301 8th Ave NW in Kasson, with Pastor Mary Kaye Ashley officiating.  Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 11, 2021, at Czaplewski Family Funeral Homes, 801 7th St SE in Kasson and one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be in Evanger Lutheran cemetery in Sargeant, MN.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are preferred to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer's Association.
