MARLYS JEANNE SWANSON

Marlys Jeanne Swanson, 94, passed away on December 11, 2023, at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield, MN.

Marlys was born March 16, 1929, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Robertson) Nurnberger in Staples, MN.  She graduated from Staples High School.  On August 3, 1949, she was united in marriage to William (Bill) Swanson in Staples, MN.

Marlys and her husband Bill moved around some before ending up raising their children in Austin, MN.  She had learned oil painting to complement Bill's photography for a time, they owned a roller rink, and also owned a nursery for a period. Bill worked for Hormel for many years.  After retirement Marlys and Bill became snowbirds and lived in Cross Lake, MN for the summer months and at Fountain of the Sun in Mesa, AZ for the colder months. She loved to golf, enjoyed company and playing cards or games with family and friends.  She liked to garden and enjoyed her roses.  She loved to dance and cross stitch when she was younger. Marlys loved her pets when they were around, she even had ceramics of her cat, George, and dog, Toby, that went with her wherever she lived. She enjoyed painting ceramics over the years. She was a lover of country music even in her last days.

Marlys is survived by her siblings, Robert Nurnberger, Staples, MN; Jim (Evie) Nurnberger, Anoka, MN; Jerry (Karen) Nurnberger, Grand Rapids, MN; and LoAnn (Michael) Wilhelmson, Motley, MN. Her children, Patti Swanson, (daughter-in-law), Mesa, AZ; Tim Swanson, Austin, MN; Andy (Carole) Swanson, Mesa, AZ; Billy (Peggy) Swanson, Mesa, AZ; Janice (Bill) Blanchard, Waltham, MN. Grandchildren Tim (Liz) Swanson; John (Stephanie) Bowen; Nathan (Angie) Swanson; Matthew Swanson; Michelle Swanson; Tom (Kate) Swanson; Shelly (Jeff) Valentine; Brad (Amy) Swanson; Carrie (Brendyn) Pagel; Paul (Kim) Blanchard; Emily (Drew) Loberg; Abby (Brady) Yaneff; and 28 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; son, Mark; grandson, Rob; sisters, Joyce and Ardy, and special friend Myron Van Hook.
There will be a private family service. Inurnment will be at Camp Ripley in Little Falls, MN at a later date. “In lieu of memorials give your loved ones a hug and tell them you love them often.”
