MAURICE ALERTON GARMAN
Maurice Alerton Garman, 95, passed away on December 28, 2016, at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield, MN.
Maurice was born on January 23, 1921, in Wetonka, SD to Benjamin Alexander and Etta Leo (Stancer) Garman. He was baptized in the Presbyterian Church on October 10, 1926, in Wetonka, SD. He attended school in Wetonka and graduated in 1939, from Mina, SD. He served in the United States Navy from March 28, 1945 to April 27, 1946, as a Motor Machinist Mate Third Class. After discharge from the Navy, he farmed with his dad for a few years in Wetonka, SD. After a few bad years farming, he went into retail and managed stores for Gambles and then Standard Auto Supply, and was a Warehouse Manager for Redfield State Hospital and School until retirement. Maurice married Gloria M. Kapp on October 27 1946. They were married for 67 years. Gloria preceded him in death on January 18, 2014. The couple lived most of their life in Aberdeen and Redfield, SD before moving to Brownsdale, MN to be close to their daughters and grandchildren. Maurice (Bud) moved to Field Crest Care Center in August of 2014. He very much enjoyed the activities, and music and being around people. He was known as Bud by many of his relatives and friends. He was a Noble with the Masons in Aberdeen, SD and was a life time member of the American Legion and VFW.
Maurice was a jack of all trades. He could tackle almost any project, including plumbing, electrical, woodworking, and mechanics. He loved to hunt pheasants, deer, and antelope. He also loved to go fishing on the Missouri River with his friends and relatives. He collected his favorite tractors and loved driving them in the tractor drives and parades. He also loved gardening and had 3 gardens up until he was 90 years old. In April of 2010, he joined the SE Minnesota WWII Veterans Honor Flight to Washington DC. Maurice and Gloria spent their retirement years between, Arizona in the winter and their homes in Midwest in the summer. They loved playing cards, and going out dancing and visiting with friends and relatives.
Maurice is survived by daughter, Donna (Steve) Boysen, Hayfield, MN; grandson, Nathan (Gabi) Boysen, great grandsons, Damarri and Logan, Hayfield, MN; grandson, Aaron Boysen, Woodbury, MN; daughter, Valerie (Dale) Kafka, Stewartville, MN; grandson, Landon (Elizabeth) Kafka, great grandson, Finn, great granddaughters, Gabi and Sophie, Menomonie, WI; grandson, Shane Kafka, Minneapolis, MN; granddaughter, Kayla Kafka, and great granddaughter, Kira, Stewartville, MN; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria; parents, brothers, Willis Garman, Ray Garman, and Carleton Garman, sister, Carol Garman Jones, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and a niece.
The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at St. Michael's Lutheran Church 30450 ~ 570th Avenue in rural Waltham, MN with the Reverend Dwight DoBell officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield with military honors by the Hayfield American Legion Rothie Post #330. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Family prefers memorials to St. Michael's Lutheran Church or donor's choice. Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Hayfield assisted with arrangements.
