PETER HENRY RIEKEN
Peter Henry Rieken, 100, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2019, at Bethany Samaritan Heritage Rehab in Rochester, MN.
Peter was born on August 27, 1918 to George and Hendreka Rieken in Butler County near Parkersburg, Iowa. His parents passed away early in life. Peter then made his home with his Uncle Riekus and Aunt Tillie Rieken. He attended country school near Parkersburg through the eighth grade. Peter was then employed as a farm laborer in northern Iowa. He married Frederika Tebben on November 11, 1950 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale Nashua, Iowa. Following this they moved to Sargeant MN and then to Hayfield where he farmed for several years. In the early 70’s he started work at Libby’s in Rochester and continued working at the canning factory under Seneca Foods until he retired. After retirement he stayed busy working for local farmer Bill Reese. In his retirement he took time to visit relatives and friends.
During his life Pete had a love for farming. He enjoyed watching sports especially football and wrestling. He also enjoyed the outdoors, taking several camping and fishing trips all over Minnesota and Canada.
Peter is preceded in death by brothers, Rieke, George Jr., Anton, Henry and Albert Rieken, a sister Mattie. He also has a daughter Gloria who disappeared in 1971.
Peter is survived by his wife Frederika of Hayfield, children Edward Rieken, Kingston Springs TN, Delores Jones, Dexter, MN, Ilene Grosam and Tom, Brownsdale, MN, Bradley Rieken and Sally, Austin, MN, Richard Rieken, and Tanya, Sargeant, MN. Grandchildren Sherri Jonsgard, Jeanette Ackman and Corey, Marie Rieken, Mary Stevens and Nick, Nancy Langelett-Dickson, Jason Grosam, Aimee Whiteaker and Nick, Rebecca Grosam and Alex, Toni Rieken, Tamra Claunch and Jeremy, Tristan Rieken, Jori Rieken and many great-grandchildren. Sisters, Annie Rieken and Rosie Riggins of Allison Iowa.
Visitation will be 4:00–7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home, 501 2 nd Street NW in Hayfield and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 104 1 st Street SE in Hayfield with Reverend Paul Hauschild officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield.
