RICHARD ARTHUR BURKHARDT

Richard Arthur Burkhardt, 91, formerly of Byron, MN passed away on November 14, 2022, at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield, MN.

Richard was born on March 23, 1931, in Rochester, MN the son of Alfred and Frances (Miller) Burkhardt.

After graduating from Plainview High School, Richard enrolled at Hibbing Community College. He finished his undergraduate coursework in Business and Accounting at the University of Minnesota. He went on to receive a degree in law from the U of M before being awarded an Education Specialist Degree from Mankato State University. He worked in Special Education Administration, at the MN Department of Education as well as in school districts, eventually ending his career in Winona, MN. His professional life was defined by a deep passion for education, and he was as devoted to his own edification as he was to facilitate the learning of others.

Richard was married to Sandra (Percival) on December 21, 1956, in Hayfield. He served in the United States Army and was a member of the Kasson American Legion. He had a lifelong passion for studying history, taking particular interest in the history of southern Minnesota, the place where he was born and lived. An avid outdoorsman, Richard enjoyed fishing, hunting, skeet shooting, camping, and traveling. Even more so, he enjoyed sharing these passions with those closest to him. His quick wit and humor will be missed by many.

Richard is survived by his wife, Sandra Burkhardt, Hayfield, MN; children, Randy (Barb) Burkhardt, Castle Rock CO; Rachelle Burkhardt, Cheyenne, WY; Robert (Jane) Burkhardt, Pine Island, MN; 8 grandchildren and one sister, Catherine Larson, Palm Springs, CA.  He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steffen and one brother, Peter.

Memorial service will be at a later date.  Blessed be his memory.
