RICHARD IRVING FJERSTAD
Richard Irving Fjerstad, 78, died peacefully Wednesday, May 15, 2019, in Austin, MN. He was born on July 23, 1940, to Selma and Emma (Langseth) Fjerstad in Hayfield, MN and was baptized on September 22, 1940, at Trinity Lutheran Church. He attended school in Hayfield and Austin. At age 19, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Chaplain Assistant from 1959-1962. He enjoyed singing and was sent to sing for many Army funerals. Following the Service, he homesteaded and built a cabin in Alaska. He married the love of his life, Delores Lee, on November 20, 1965, at the Little Brown Church.
Richard was a man of many talents and held many jobs including milk hauler, farm hand, concrete layer, construction foreman, general contractor, on-site caretaker for the Minneapolis YMCA Camp in Eveleth, MN, manager of Midtown Manor in Hayfield and was a custodian at Citizens State Bank and Trinity Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed being a Boy Scout leader, Trinity Lutheran Church Council member, Fairview Cemetery Board member, and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Hayfield American Legion.
Richard enjoyed fishing, dancing, singing, nature walks with Delores, and antique collecting. He was a handy-man who could fix anything and was always helping people God put in his path.
Richard is survived by his wife, Delores, of 53 years; two sons; Rich (Liz), Ron (Kerry); grandchildren Andrew (Caitlin), Amelia (Tyler), and Isaac; great-granddaughter, Natalie, and two babies on the way; brothers Sterling, Don (Mickey), and Ken (Barb) and sisters Betty Andrist, Glenda (Paul) Flores and Judy (Gary) Lorimore and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister LaVonne and brother Farrell.
Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Czaplewski Family Funeral Home, 501 2 nd Street NW in Hayfield and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. The Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday May 24, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 104 1 st Street SE in Hayfield with Reverend Paul Hauschild officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery with Military Honors by the Hayfield American Legion.
