Robert Virgil Rud

Robert Virgil Rud, 90, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2021 at Field Crest Care Center in Hayfield, MN., just three weeks and three days after his beloved wife Lois of 65 years. Bob was born in rural Stewartville, MN on September 4, 1930, the son of Charles and Mabel (Larson) Rud. He graduated from Stewartville High School in 1949. He farmed with his father in rural Stewartville until enlisting in the United States Air Force. He proudly served as an active member of the United States Air Force from December 22, 1951 through December 21, 1955 and was stationed at the Harlingen Air Force Base in Harlingen, Texas. He served for two of the four years in Japan. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, and the Good Conduct Medal. Robert was very proud of his time in the Air Force and enjoyed boxing, playing football and diving while in the service.

Robert married Lois Ann House on October 22, 1955 in Harlingen, Texas and have celebrated 65 years of marriage. After the air force, they returned to farm in rural Stewartville and he worked as a foreman at Rochester Sand and Gravel for 19 years.  In 1974 they moved to a larger farm in rural Hayfield. He loved serving his country and he loved farming. Robert was the oldest of seven siblings, Genevieve Badger, Dorothy Vonch, Donald Rud, Ruth Hareldson, LeRoy Rud, Joan Groszbach and Stanley Rud - he loved them all very much and was very proud to be their older brother.

Robert is survived by their children. Three sons and two daughters. Her son Robert Rud Jr., Hayfield, MN and his children Matt (Ali Flath, fiancé) and Jacob Rud (Lauren “Lo” Hill and her daughter, Lily), Son, Ronald Rud of Hayfield and his children Nathan (Tricia) Rud, (parents to Tyson and Sawyer);  Amanda (Brandon) Vermilyea, (parents to Cami, Cooper, Casey and Colby); Sam (Emily) Rud, (parents to Charlie and Jack) and Bailey Rud;  Son, Rick (Patty) Rud of Lakeville, and his children Eric Rud and Emily (Dave) Bernardy (parents to Reese Bernardy), daughter, Rebecca (Steve) Demmer of Byron, MN and their children Angela (Derek) Hietala (parents to Aviella, Grayson and Lyla) and Luke Demmer (parent to Hailey and Hayden); and daughter Regena (Neal) Anderson of Hayfield, MN and their children John (Cassie) Anderson (parents to Anamarie and Violet) and Cory Anderson.

Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife Lois; his parents, one sister Genevieve Badger, one brother Stanley Rud and daughter in law Terrie Rud. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield, MN and Season’s Hospice, Rochester, MN.

Visitation will be 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 104 1st Street SE in Hayfield with the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. A military service will follow at the Hayfield Memorial Park by Rothie Post #330 just north of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Lunch to follow in the church fellowship hall. Czaplewski Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
