Sonja Kay Peters-Hartig

Sonja Peters-Hartig, age 50, of Kasson, MN passed away peacefully on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Mayo Clinic Methodist Campus in Rochester, MN.  Sonja was surrounded by her family and showered in love and support from so many other friends and family who were not able to be there.   Sonja lost a lengthy battle of Leukemia.

Sonja, the daughter of Gilbert and Lonnetta Hartig, was born on June 26, 1974.  She graduated from Fort Dodge Iowa High School in 1992.  She raised three children and then pursued a life career working in various daycares or being a nanny.  Her love of children gave her 30 years of helping to raise children.  Sonja was a loving sister, mother, wife, aunt, and grandma.

After a struggling life, Sonja met her husband, Shawn Peters and they united in marriage on June 13, 2018.  This gave Sonja an adventurous lifestyle as she was introduced to the work of the Renaissance festivals, hot air ballooning, and the Knights of Columbus, along with continuing her interests in rodeos, movies, and holiday decorating.  These adventures lead to meeting many new friends to call family.

She is survived by her husband, Shawn; two children, Alexandria Kocher and Marcus Kocher, both of Des Moines, IA; two sisters, Tammy (Terry) Arndt of Burlington, ND and Jody Knowles of Fort Dodge, IA; aunts; three grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, and a great-great niece and nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Brenda Lee; and daughter, Ariel Culver.

We want to extend a sincere thank you to the Hematology team and Palliative care team at Mayo Clinic who helped in Sonja’s care from the start of her journey and through the end.  It was fun to hear that the staff often fought over who got to provide the care to Sonja when she would visit for her appointments and treatment.

Sonja brought joy to everyone she met and will be missed by her family, friends, and all those who got to know her.

A visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 202 4th St NW in Byron, MN and one hour prior to her service at the church on Thursday. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Christ the King Catholic Church with Father John Lasuba officiating.   Interment will be in St. Margaret's Catholic Cemetery in Mantorville, MN.
