STERLING ALLEN NESS
Sterling Allen Ness, 76, of rural Kasson, MN passed away on June 19th, 2018. Sterling was born on May 2nd, 1942, son of Stanley and Alice (Boyum) Ness in Rochester. He attended the local country school close to the home farm and graduated from Kasson Mantorville High School in 1959-1960. He continued his education and played football at Luther College in Decorah, IA. From there, he was employed by Crenlo in Rochester for over 17 years, where he worked his way up to be head of the paint department.
On April 30th, 1966, Sterling married Naomi Sue Dee at the Methodist Church in New Albin, IA. They have lived on the current farm since 1970, and were happily married for over 50 years. Sterling had a strong faith and was baptized and confirmed as a member of South Zumbro Lutheran Church. There he served on the board and volunteered his services with the cemetery and snow removal. Sterling was very much involved in the community as a member of the Dodge County Posse for many years, Dodge County Corn Growers, Kasson Lumber Company board, Canisteo Town Hall, and helped Sinnwell Livestock and Machinery Auction Service, sold Pioneer Seed Corn for 20 years, and hauled livestock for local farmers in the area.
His true love was farming, but he and Sue did enjoy going camping, taking bus trips, where they had many adventures and meeting new friends along the way. Sterling also enjoyed going to stock car and drag races, as he had done in his earlier years… a kid at heart, he took on go-carting with a track on the farm and was known to be very competitive, showing he could run right up there with the younger generation. He liked fishing, hunting, collecting and trading old cars and tractors…reliving the ole days.
Sterling was well respected and had a gift of gab, some would say that you knew when Sterling was present in the room…his charm and personality, and often funny one liners would brighten your day.
Survivors include his son, Timothy Ness; grandson, Coltan Ness; brother, Thomas Ness (Mary Adam); nephews, Todd (Jerri) Ness and Craig (Victoria) Ness. He was preceded in death by his wife, sister, and parents.
