Vernon Walter Jackel

Vernon Walter Jackel of West Concord passed away on October 23, 2017 at Blooming Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie, MN where he had resided for the past 3 years. He was 85 years old.

Vernon was born to Walter and Esther (Schmidt) Jackel at home on their farm in Steele County. He grew up on the farm near Claremont & graduated from Claremont High School in 1950.  He was the oldest of 5 children.  He was active in school & church choir as he enjoyed singing, and also active in sports, especially basketball.  He loved nature & that led to a lifetime love of farming.  He served in the US Army from 1950 to 1954; where he drove truck in Korea.   After that he drove truck for Kruckeberg trucking company and worked for Owatonna Canning Company.

He loved to dance and through that he met his future wife. He married Harriet Maren Naylor on July 27, 1957.  They were married until her death on November 29, 1994.   They had 2 sons:  Eugene Vernon (Kathy) and Walter David (Donya) & 1 son who died at birth.  They farmed  near West Concord  and Vernon continued there until 2006.

Vernon is survived by his sons, Eugene (Kathy) and Walter (Donya), 3 granddaughters: Jackie Marie Johnson (Jeff Schneiter), LaToya Elizabeth Jackel and Tabetha Casey Jackel. He has 5 great grandchildren: Kyler, MacKenna and Rylee Johnson, Braelynn and Logan Aubrey.  He is also survived by brothers David Dean (Dorothy), Donald Eugene (Barbara), sister Eunice Elaine (LaVerne) Ehlers.  He was preceded in death by a brother Harlan Ellsworth and his wife Carolyn.    He was also preceded in death by two sisters-in-law: Pauline Franks and Margie Grunklee.   He is survived by brother-in-law Wilmar Grunklee and sister-in-law Shirley (Loren) Vrieze.   He is also survived by many nieces & nephews.  He was preceded in death by special friend, Della Schmidtke.  Vernon will be dearly missed by his family and his many friends.

The visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2017, at Czaplewski Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 25 South Street in Dodge Center and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.

The funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Grace Lutheran Church, 460 Central Avenue North in Dodge Center, MN with Reverend Timothy Chase officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Havana Township, Steele County.
