Walter (Red) William Nelson

Walter (Red) Nelson, 81, passed away on April 14, 2023 in Albert Lea, MN.

Walter was born on November 11, 1941, the son of Melvin and Vernice (Bauman) Nelson.

Red attended Hayfield High School and graduated in 1960 and served in the Army for two years. He started his business driving a dump truck in Hayfield and in the meantime was asked to drive school bus, but said no.  Later he changed his mind and started driving school bus and then bought the bus company.  He met Linda and they were married on August 21, 1971 in Blooming Prairie and they had three children.  Red worked part time as a custodian at the school, and drove school bus for 57 years, retiring in December of 2022.

Red enjoyed stock car races, camping, sporting events, reading, sitting outside and visiting with his neighbors.  He enjoyed life and especially his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Nelson; sons, Jerry (Monica) Nelson of Albert Lea, MN, Mark (Cara) Nelson of Kasson, MN; and daughter Amy Nelson of Hayfield, MN; grandchildren, Carissa and Tanner Nelson; and sister, Gloria (Ramon) Simonson.

Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2023, at Czaplewski Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 501 2 ^nd Street NW in Hayfield and one hour before the service on Tuesday.

The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 104 1 ^st Street SE in Hayfield with Reverend Kristen Anderson officiating.  Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield with military honors by the Hayfield American Legion Rothie Post #330.
